This february was touched by a great piece of news: Pope Benedict XVI announced that he would leave his position due to health problems and old age. On the 11th of February, the Pope himself announced that he would step down from being the leader of the catholic church. His motives are health problems and old age.
Most people reacted positively to the pope announcing this, world leaders said that they have a lot of respect for him. The same reaction was among the common people as well. Some questioned his motives and didn’t agree with it though.
There is a lot of speculation on who the next pope will be. It’s funny how each media outlet focuses on another potential ‘favorite’. Of course there is a lot of speculation as there is an ancient prophecy that the pope who will follow Benedict XVI will be the last pope. People who believe in signs saw a big one when a lightning hit the Vatican on the night of Benedict XVI resignation day. Benedictus XVI is the first pope to resign in 600 years. Benedict XVI, who is 85 is known for his conservative and harsh take on controversial and modern issues, but is also known for strengthening connections between religions and Christian denominations.
Joseph Ratzinger was elected pope in 2005, after the death of pope John Paul II on April 2nd.
The pope, who is of German origin, will remain the leader of the Catholic church until February 28th at 8.00 PM, Vatican time. After that, it is expected for a conclave to begin, as it is expected that the new pope will be in place before Easter.
Pope Benedict XVI already held his last service in St. Peter’s square in Vatcian City.
I’m really curious of what will happen. The pope said that he wants to step down because he can not perform his duties due to mental and physical weakness, which could be a hint to his wish that the next pope should be a younger man. I’m also curious to see on whether the next pope will be more open to controversial issues, even though chances are slim, as he is the one who elected the cardinals that will choose the next pope. In the Catholic world, the pope is considered the leader of the Church, St. Peter’s follower and the vicar of Christ.
